本诗夸张的形式就仿写自《巨人传》第四部中对封斋教主（Quaresmeprenant）的解剖式描述。拉伯雷在文中用极尽铺张的夸诞类比，讽刺地描绘出一位又斋戒又狂欢的巨人头目，一贯到底的类比像枯槁冗长的布道，却又转化为诨趣的意象饕餮。
拉伯雷的描写本身也戏仿了文艺复兴时期一种叫作blason的诗歌形式。Blason一词与中世纪的家族纹章（blazon）同源，表现为列举人体的各部位各器官，将它们一一比作自然之物，尤其是在男诗人笔下。他们从不吝于切割自己女神的身体，她时常眸如明星、齿如珍珠、发如金丝、泪如水晶……
法国诗人克莱芒·马罗被认为首先在法语中将blason发展成熟，在彼时如龙萨、彼得拉克、莎士比亚等欧洲大诗人的情诗里，都运用过这样的形式。而blason似乎天然高蹈，非常容易滑入矫饰，除情诗外被很快地用于讽喻诗，可无缝衔接高雅与低俗元素。它像双面镜一般折射出赞颂与讽刺，细致与泛滥，正如巴赫金在对拉伯雷作品怪诞狂欢的论述里，也强调了其亦粉亦黑的含混模糊性。它的变形手法还与超现实主义高度相通，到了现代主义时期，重生在了从鲁文·达里奥到布列东的作品里。
传统诗歌里充满了男性对女性的凝视（male gaze），女诗人在《我的男朋友》里把关系掉了个个儿，大胆地回视男人（the female gazes back），其中有对爱人的倾慕，又像情人间的玩笑，暗含着情色，又怀着对世界的天真。
“我”除了出现在标题，在全诗里巧妙地隐匿了，潜在的女性视角带着冷静的欲望，不断地解剖男朋友熟悉亲密的身体。对男朋友的解剖就像一个追寻世间形态关联的过程，她身处“他”世界，好奇地探寻其间。同时，在这具开放的肉身上，她尝试着包罗和交融她自身的概念与经验、自然与日常细节、风物志与私密史。
女诗人目前正在编辑一本情诗集，题为《爱的天赋：来自过去和现在的给现代爱人的诗》。她的作品喜欢用早期英诗的元素和形式，而她谜一样的“男朋友”也多次出现在她的诗里，态度总暧昧不明，越描绘越叫人捉摸不定，时常像位能穿梭古今的永恒情人正无奈面对当下现实的嘲讽。
这首诗里的男朋友既具象又无形，既恣意妄为又被文明打磨。而以这样的人体解剖式描绘，女性的情感书写回应着文学史和凝视的权力关系，并不动声色地纵情声色，捉摸那具象又无形的情欲。
